He showed a natural gift for the game from an early age, turning professional at 22. His PGA Tour debut in the 1962 began with a statement: defeating the legendary Arnold Palmer at the U.S. Open — a preview of what was to come. Over his career, he accumulated 73 PGA Tour victories and a record 18 major championship titles that, decades later, remains unmatched.
He was nicknamed the Golden Bear for his power and ferocity on the course. The PGA named him Golfer of the Century in 1988. In 2005, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom — the highest civilian honor in the United States — and is one of only two golfers to hold that distiction alongside the Congressional Gold Medal.
But Nicklaus’ story didn’t end when he retired form competition. He built a second career as a golf course designer that many consider equally extraordinary. His firm, Nicklaus Design, has created over 425 courses across 45 countries — the largest golf course design company in the world.
